Today Vicky and I prepared ceviche (say-VEE-chay) for all of the Arriba students and Language Helpers. This recipe is from Northern Peru with a Lima twist! I can't say it was my favorite food, but I ate it and lived. And now I can officially say I ate shark! Toyo, the fish that we used, is a type of little shark. Ceviche is a dish of raw fish that has been acid cooked in lime juice, mixed with fresh cilantro, ginger, and celery; and served with red onion, toasted corn, sweet potato, corn, and rocoto (very hot) pepper.
Our Biology class headed on an 8 hour bus ride up into the Mountains of Peru last Friday. We left Lima at 11 P.M. and arrived in Huaraz at 7:30 ish A.M. Saturday. After breakfast, we had a couple hours of class and lecture in the Stilwell's church then headed out for lunch. After a short break in the afternoon, we had another class and went to Jovenes at the church. Maria and Elita were the first other girls there and we got to talk for a while before teaching them how to play hangman. Sunday we went to that same church morning and evening. During the evening service I helped in the Children's Church and even earned a sticker for saying my verse!
Monday we woke early and headed up the mountain to the twin lakes of Llanganoko. We stopped several times to study various plants and animals. Every moment was a learning experience as we traveled along on Monday, then again on Tuesday when we when to Pastoruri. |
AuthorMy name is Kimberly and I just finished my sophomore year at Faith Baptist Bible College. I am going on this trip because that is where God is leading me at this point in my life. I am in the Elementary Education program at FBBC, and there is a large number of Spanish speakers in U.S. schools as well as Christian schools abroad that need teachers. I am seeking to follow God's leading and to serve Him to the best of the ability He has given me. Archives
